Can AI check my eyes for diabetes damage?

Yes, AI can now help screen for diabetic eye damage, and Indian states are rolling it out in 2026. A camera photographs the back of your eye, AI software flags possible diabetic retinopathy, and anyone flagged is sent to an eye specialist. It is a screening tool, not a final diagnosis, so it works best as part of a yearly eye check for everyone with diabetes.
What is diabetic retinopathy
Diabetes can slowly damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. Early on there are often no symptoms; by the time vision blurs, damage can be advanced. India's challenge is scale: millions of people with diabetes and too few retina specialists to examine every eye.
How AI screening works
- A trained health worker or optometrist takes a photo of the retina with a fundus camera, sometimes a portable one.
- AI software analyses the photo and grades how likely it is that retinopathy is present and how serious it may be.
- People with suspected disease are referred to an ophthalmologist for a full examination and treatment.
What happened in India in 2026
Andhra Pradesh pilot (June 2026)
Andhra Pradesh launched an AI pilot at the government hospital in Guntur on 10 June 2026, extending to Kurnool and Visakhapatnam, with about 9,000 patients expected to be screened over three months. The system, Madhunetra, was developed by the Wadhwani Foundation with AIIMS Delhi and AIIMS Rishikesh and, according to The New Indian Express, is already used in 45 medical colleges across several states, including Uttar Pradesh. It lets trained optometrists screen patients and flag those who need a specialist.
Tamil Nadu scheme (September 2026)
On 18 September 2026, Tamil Nadu pre-launched the "Vizhithirai Kaappom" retina protection scheme, with retinal screening planned at 385 block primary health centres, 37 district hospitals and 150 urban primary health centres, and ₹45.53 crore allocated. Officials said the state already has 180 AI-equipped field fundus cameras.
Telangana district programme (October 2026)
In Wanaparthy district, Telangana, field teams with portable AI-enabled cameras had screened 17,873 diabetic patients by 1 October 2026; 1,267 (about 7%) were flagged as suspected diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma and referred.
How accurate is it
A study from Sudha Medical College, Kota, Rajasthan, published in August 2026, tested an AI system on 201 adults with type 2 diabetes. Compared with a retina specialist, the AI detected any diabetic retinopathy with 95.3% sensitivity and 92.7% specificity, and referable retinopathy with 92.3% sensitivity and 94.9% specificity. This is encouraging, but it was a single hospital and a small group, and results can differ with other cameras, software and settings.
The limits to keep in mind
- AI can miss disease or raise false alarms. A "normal" result is not a guarantee.
- A screening photo does not replace a full eye examination by an ophthalmologist when one is needed.
- It is not a complete eye check for glasses power, cataract or other conditions.
What this means for people in Lucknow and UP
- If you have diabetes, get your retina checked at least once a year, or as often as your doctor advises, even if your vision feels fine.
- Ask your diabetologist or eye hospital whether retinal photo screening is available. AI-assisted screening is spreading through government medical colleges, including in Uttar Pradesh.
- Keep your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol under control. This is the best protection for your retina.
- See an ophthalmologist urgently if you notice sudden blurred vision, dark floaters, a curtain over your vision or distorted lines.

FAQ
- Does AI replace the eye doctor?
No. AI helps sort who needs a specialist. Anyone flagged still needs an ophthalmologist to confirm the diagnosis and plan treatment.
- How often should someone with diabetes get a retina check?
Usually at least once a year, and more often if retinopathy is found or diabetes is poorly controlled. Follow your doctor's advice.
- My vision is clear. Do I still need a check?
Yes. Early diabetic retinopathy often causes no symptoms. Screening is how it is caught early.
- Can new glasses fix diabetic retinopathy?
No. Glasses correct focusing problems. Diabetic retinopathy needs medical care from an ophthalmologist. Blood sugar changes can also shift your glasses power for a while, so tell your optometrist if you have diabetes.
