Are there glasses that focus automatically for reading and distance?

Yes, but they are still very new. In 2026 a Finnish startup, IXI, has been testing prototype "autofocus" glasses that track your eyes and switch the lens power for near or far, and a Japanese company, ViXion, began selling autofocus eyewear called ViXion2 in Japan in April 2026. Neither is a ready, everyday replacement for progressive glasses in India yet, so for now a well-fitted pair of progressives or reading glasses is still the practical answer.
Why people over 40 want this
After about 40, almost everyone develops presbyopia: the eye loses its ability to change focus, so reading a phone or a medicine label gets harder. Reading glasses, bifocals and progressives fix this with fixed lens zones. Autofocus glasses try a different idea: the lens itself changes power when you change where you look.
What IXI is building
IXI showed its prototype at the CES technology show in Las Vegas in January 2026. As reported at the time:
- Infrared sensors in the frame work out where your eyes are looking.
- Liquid crystal lenses add near-vision power when you look at your phone, then return to your distance prescription.
- The prototypes weighed about 22 grams, with a battery designed to last a full day.
- If the battery runs out, the glasses fall back to a normal single prescription.
The report also noted some edge distortion, and that more testing was needed before calling them suitable for driving.
In a May 2026 interview with the optics magazine MAFO, IXI's CEO Niko Eiden said the key milestone this year is CE marking (European approval), without which there can be no sale. IXI has signed a letter of intent with Atol, a French optician group, and Vizio to explore commercial pilots in France, and said pricing will be in the premium range, around the level of high-end progressive lenses. In September 2026, IXI said its prototypes had moved into daily-use testing with real people outside the lab. No launch date for India has been announced.
What ViXion2 is
ViXion, a Japanese company, started selling ViXion2 in Japan on 17 April 2026 at a listed price of 100,000 yen before tax. It uses a sensor to measure distance and a lens that changes shape, with a stated focus range from 5 cm to infinity and up to about 15 hours of use per charge.
Two points from ViXion's own announcement matter a lot:
- ViXion says the product is not a medical device under Japanese law.
- ViXion says you should not drive a car or ride a bicycle while wearing it.
So ViXion2 is a specialised gadget, not a replacement for regular prescription glasses.
What this means for people in Lucknow and India
- As of October 2026, we could not find any announced India launch for IXI or ViXion2.
- Cheap online "auto focus reading glasses" are usually ordinary lenses with a marketing name. They do not track your eyes.
- The proven options remain reading glasses, bifocals and progressives, prescribed after a proper eye test.
- If you drive or ride a two-wheeler in Lucknow, you need stable, clear distance vision. Do not drive in new tech eyewear unless the maker clearly allows it.
- Sudden vision change, or blur with pain or redness, needs an ophthalmologist, not new glasses.

FAQ
- Can I buy autofocus glasses in Lucknow?
Not as of October 2026. IXI has not launched yet, ViXion2 is sold in Japan, and we found no announced India launch.
- Will autofocus glasses replace progressive lenses?
Maybe one day, but not yet. They still need regulatory approval, real-world testing and charging every day. Progressive lenses remain the proven option for near and distance in one pair.
- Can I drive with autofocus glasses?
ViXion says not to drive or cycle with ViXion2. IXI says distance correction stays fixed even if the battery dies, but it has not launched. Use your regular prescribed glasses for driving.
- At what age should I check for presbyopia?
Most people notice it around 40 to 45. If reading small print is getting harder, get an eye test rather than guessing a reading-glass power.
